Chet Adkins thimb and finger style is one of the best in my opinion. also Ricky Scaggs earl scruggs
Trace Bundy
It's tough to name just one, so here's my top 5:

Hendrix
SRV
BB King
Robert Johnson
Yngwie Malmsteen
of my parents era, i say eric clapton was and still is the greatest, although i do think SRV died in his prime years
now in my era (i'm 21) i have to say johnny lang will be the best

That is a tough call, depends on how you define the greatest. I've seen a few guitarists that aren't famous that would blow your mind. My buddy's guitar teacher Bruce Shockley is the best I've ever seen. He lived and played in Nashville for years, and was known as "the baddest guitar player in Nashville" by many.

As for big names, you could say Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and the list goes on. Some really good guitarists currently are Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Prince, and the slide guitar player from Union Station (Allison Krause's band). I've seen some classical guitar players that are amazing too. Picking a greatest of all time is pretty much impossible though.
Ya good point.. I'm seeing what you all thing.

I completely agree. I could make a list of about 20 or 30...many from each genre.
Junior Brown

or, slightly behind, in my opinion, Dick Dale
Carlos Santana
John T. Hooker
Jimmie Paige
Slash
Jimi Hendrix
B.B. King

That'd be a couple I'd pick...

Surprised to hear someone else knows of Junior Brown :bigthumb: He does play extremely well.
Lynyrd Skynyrd or Jimmy Paige.
Joe Satrinani or Eric Johnson
Not sure if I spelled them right
"surfing with the alien" and "cliffs of dover" are 2 of my favorite albums

Holy smokes man, i was gonna say Chet Adkins or Merle Travis, best guitar pickers in history if you ask me. But if i have to pick from recent guitar players it would be either "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, or Richard Z. Kruspe-Bernstein of Rammstein....
The metallica guitarist is Kirk Hammett.

1. Kirk hammett (Metallica)
2. Carlos santana (Santana)
3. Brian "Head" welsh (Korn/Solo)
4. Paul "Munky" Shaffer (Korn)
5. Terry (cold/evenesance)

LMAO!!! I was so thinking the same thing.

Really, though...Hendrix and Clapton deserve some props. Then there's my daddy...He does a mean rendition of the Sesame Street song.
