54 in a 35. damn me! ok my new truck has alot of power and it rides so sweet. listening to the new system of a down cd. all these things make it far to easy to drive faster then what i know i should be. i know what your saying, "pay attention and slow down" but i know how i am and im gonna end up over the speed limit again sometime. so what im wondering about is radar dectors. do they work, and are they legal in california. thanks in advance for any info on this subject.

don't feel bad. Everyone speeds. I would be surprised if you could find a person that had been driving a long time and not gotten at least one ticket. Now you try and drive in a friggin huge tahoe, and tell me that's not flashy and loud. Anyways Radar detectors are terrific if you can shell out enough money to buy the big guns. I don't have one because I have absolutely no money left. My brother and my family all have them and love them. Valentine One will be your absolute best bet. They tell you what kind of signal, where it's coming from and how many there are. No more slamming on your brakse for a electronic door. The only setback of this radar detector is in your wallet. $300 dollars and the thing's yours....almost ticket-proof.

As for California, things are messed up there. I dunno about your laws but I'm sure that all the people here can tell you.

As far as I know, dectors are not banned in CA. (At least not in my area) I've had mine now for 2yrs, and it's saved my but a few times! It can dectect both radar and laser. Our local cops use radar, haven't seen laser yet.
If your prone to a "heavy foot" you should get one.

P.S. I got mine immediatly after gettin popped 55 in a 45 zone!

Later....

I just got popped for going 87 in a 40. only prob is that a radar detector wouldnt have worked. he had a car mounted unit that sends front and back. i was coming at him, but going around a corner in mountain roads. the detector would have warned me too late.

if you can't go with the valentine, don't bother. laser is a done deal. one shot, one car, you're busted. i know for fact that chp has laser in most of their cars. (read: nabbed north of fontana) as for radar, that's a game you gotta learn to play. you could just save up for the next ticket and pray your insurance doesn't catch up with you...
most of the units i used to sell at a local stereo shop were cincinatti microwave units. cin is the parent company of bel, one of the finer product lines out there. they seem to false less then the uniden i had at the time. i don't run one anymore. can't legally have one in my semi, so i live without it altogether.

they are legal here in CA. I have one and it has saved me several times as well. If it saves you from just 1 ticket it has paid for itself! Mine is also a lasar detector but that is rather useless. If you get popped by lasar, it just lets you know to start getting your paperwork ready because you are busted.
I'm moving to VA soon and they are banned there. From what I was told, if you even have one unplugged an sitting in the glove box they will nail you to the wall....I plan on hard wiring mine into the truck with a cut off switch so that its not visable, but can still be heard. they will need to tear my truck apart to find it.....
In the situation you got your ticket, I really doubt that it would have helped out. However, on a long haul to LA they let you know if the CHP is around and hunting. but then again, nothing is a better "cop buster" then a CB. The truckers ALWAYS share thet info. I used to drive from LA to New Orleans once a month and I would know where the cops where hunting 100 miles away just by listening to the CB chatter.
I say get one, but nothing too expensive. I paid $50 at Best Buy. The cool thing is that it also alerts me if there are emergancy vehicles in the area. That part comes in handy.
Hope it helps out.

hawaiiluver,

87 mph in a 40??? Wouldn't that be considered wreckless driving? That's more than double the speed limit??? Did he charge you with wreckless driving???

A navy bud of mine got nailed very early one morning on his GSXR 750....160 in a 35! The cop had been doing paperwork when he flew by. My bud thought that since it was 3AM and nobody was around (he was leaving his GF's house after a fight to come back to base) he just punched it and got on the freeway. After strertching its legs a bit he slowed down. Next thing he knows is that LA's finest is lighting him up with the spot light under their chopper. He has hauled away and lost his licance for a year, plus $2500 in fines, 2 years probabtion, impounded bike, LOTs of community service, several nights in the clink, and attorny's fees (it was a felony charge). Up until then, he had a perfect driving record.....

I saw a guy doing about 130 on his bike when he hit the back end of a trailer with no lights(about 10:30 at night)... needles to say he is dead. I have never understood why you would drive a bike that fast... and that guy didnt have a helmet either!

As far as the Radar/Laser Detectores... I have the Escort 8500. it has saved me a couple times, but I like it just because I usually do not speed that much, I just like it because if I am not paying attention to my speedo, its a little reminder when a Police officer is around. Hell I am going to hopefully finish school and be a Police Officer myself in the next 4 years (I am 24 and changing my career, go figure) But yeah, laser, you are toast!!!

Go with the CB, Drove to Ohio last summer, and that saved my hide... I was driving through Illinois and a guy with a radar detector was flying along, then he'd nail his brakes... I'd pass him, then here you comes again, then nail the brakes... haha the truck drivers noticed the same thing, and asked the traffic going the other direction, if there was any cops... Nope, not one. It was far more amusing watching this guy. but yeah the CB's work the best, guys relay info all the time, and hardley do you see a cop you didn't already now about 5 miles back. Heck I was tailing 3 rigs doing 100+ for a while. But I didn't admit that. However my speeding story (ANother words got caught), I was orginally doing 90-95 in a 55. Noticed my speed, let of the gas and was in the process of getting to 55. made a comment, like "Good thing there aren't any cops..." that was my downfall, as I a saw a CHP bike coming the other way. She caught my doing 80 in a 55. I pleaded guilty and the judge gave me a break as it was my first (and last offence). He let me take traffic school, so my insurance doesn't find out... Needless to say, I try my dardest not to speed more than 5 miles over the speedlimit (Unless the cop is having a bad day, they consider that a speedometer calibration error, another words a grey zone)... well if a cop is pulling the old instant on trick than a radar wont do you a bit of good. I know cause I got 3 in one months time, yea I didnt learn the first time (93 in a 55 cost me $102.50) best deal is to run with the traffic. They cant stop all of you

oh but they can try. Last week heading into LA, coming down the 5 into Castaic. I saw 5 CHP, 3 cruisers, a wieght scale pick-up truck and a Motorcycle cop. Their intention was to get as many as possable. They were ideally set up to get any and everybody coming down that hill too fast. They were on the houlder behind a bridge overpass, sitting parade style... needless to say, just because there is a few of you, doesn't help if there are more of them. Also the CHP has just gotten some new all white, slick back (No lights mounted on top) Camaros... So watch out!!!

Hey rampage, you are right they are illegal here in VA, illegal to have in the vehicle, if they find one they can take it from you. Also here in VA some of the county's have unmarked Z28(P.O.S.) they dont have the Z28 markings but they do have the exhaust. Here in Henrico(Richmond, if you watch NASCAR thats the county that Richmond International Speedway is in) the police have a few Dodge ram sports, 2wd shortbed's with the 360. the blue lights are dash mounted and in the fog lights. I have seen a dark green and black one. On both the Ram and Z28 the only antenna is a small cell phone type antenna about 8 inches tall. They are tricky areound here, the Va state police just went to a "smoothie" thats what they are calling their new lumina's without roof lights, they sport lights in the grille dash and integrated into the mirrors.

Biginuf... they are only "illegal" if you get caught! :): I had my Valentine One for three years in VA and never got caught. If you go to Valentineone.com you'll see/read about them. Yes they are pricey but WELL WORTH! every penny. They are by far (and i'm being partial here I know) the best on the market. I am also aware that VA police (state troopers mostly, tho loudoun county sheriffs did have a couple) have radar detector detectors. The Valentine One (because its in a metal case as opposed to the plastic case most others come in) shield the "radiation" that the cops use to detect your detector hence making it almost invisible to cops. They also have a second face plate you can put down by your guages and hook in using a phone line to the actual detector that turns off all of the lights on the detector itsself (keeping cops behind you from seeing it, and people behind you from using your detector as well).

I mounted mine above my rear view mirror and ran the wires across the headliner and down the drivers side pilliar and into the dashboard. You couldn't ever tell I had one from outside either because I had a 5% tint strip hand cut and installed across the factory tint line. If you read VA Law you cannot have any tint on the front window that extends down 5" or (if you have one) the AS1 line (which is where your factory tint ends). So as long as you stick with the AS1 line the cops can not screw with you.

Now comes the question will the tint affect the radar detector (you can reference ValentineOne's website if you doubt this). No, standard window tint (the black stuff) will not affect radar detectors. The mirrored/reflective tint will, because that style tint has metal flakes in it which will reflect the signal back to the detector rendering it useless.

Later :):, and if your gonna speed atleast try to get away. If I see a cop pull out when I'm in town I'll take turns (tho don't always turn the same way, cops are taught to predict how drivers will flee. And most drivers will keep turning the same way) thru strange neighborhoods because I'd rather try to find my way out of someone else's neighborhood than get a ticket :):.

Disclaimer: I am not endorsing the attempted get-a-way you think I am.

Chris good call your right, its not illegal if you dont get caught, My neighbor was telling me about a radar detector, the entire system is mounted in your grille and under the rear bumper, then you mount a small box in the cab, when 1 of the detectors is set off, a siren and lights goes off to warn you. They were designed for long haul vehicles.

hehe :): I have one of those too. Its made by Bell. The version I have isn't sold anymore however they are designing a newer/better one that is due out shortly (as in SOON). Its a component system. The radar detector is a black box about 2 cigarette packs big (stacked ontop of each other) and you can mount it anywhere you want (but not behind metal as radar can't penetrate metal), the laser pickup is smaller than a lighter and I velcroed it to the rear view mirror of my Z-28 (prior to buying my Valentine One). Ran the wire from the radar box thru the stock wiring looms so that it was damn near impossible (it took me three hours to remove the wiring I had it in there so well) to see, the wire from the laser pickup I ran similiar to how I have my V-1 hooked up, and put the little display (hell, its can't be any bigger than a pack of matches) just below and to the right of my steering column. Unless you look for it you can't see it (even when its on). I've had friends sit in my Camaro and tell them to look for it and they can't even see it.

My system has this, and I'm sure the new one will too (this is how I found out about the new design coming out). I was inquiring about purchasing a second radar and laser pickup for the rear of my Camaro (the display box has four ports (two for front two for rear), when they told me the new one was coming out.
