id try chaning out the switches first. mine had sorta the same problem....i couldnt control temperature...come to find out my switch and temp door motor were bad.
s-10 heater controls
96 S-10, 2.2L 2wd. The dash controls for the defroster, floor, and other positions doesn't really change. Its always coming out of the same vents and I can't control which ones. Could this be something simple like a vacuum line, or something more expensive like the electrical switch itself? The blower and blower switch works just fine.

How much was the motor and where is it located on the truck? Is that what changes what vents the air goes out?
under the hood there is a vacum line by the hood hinge on the driver side. it plugs into a plastic piece in the fender. i have a 99 and i think they should be the same. the guages work on vacum. good luck
