First off, make sure they are legal to have inside your vehicle. In Indiana, it is a misdemeanor to possession a police scanner while in a vehicle.

Other wise, it depends which frequency band(s) you plan on monitoring. Some hardmount scanners are low for low band, some a high megahertz only, some are trunk scanners, etc. Find out what frequency you are going to listen to and then look for scanners that are capable of monitoriing those frequencies.

I really like my Uniden BC350XLT, it is only 16 bands, but I only monitor 15 departments in my county.
Check Ebay, good selection and good prices.
Ummmm...I know this is probably a dumb question, but why have a police scanner in your vehicle?
i already checked with my school officier.. he said it was legal... and as far as y? one to see were cops are hidding and jsut for the fact of pure entertaiment.... i want to use it for listening ot the cops... mainly local...

I have one in my garage that I'm not using..fairly new.
i have a hand held one in my truck, and a regular one in my room, but i only listen to fire... they are both uniden, and work great
for the mobile scanners (not handhelds)...what do you use for an antenna?

You use a scanner antenna of course :flipoff:

They look like a CB antenna but are designed to pick up different frequencies than CB does.

Then you must not listen much :flipoff: They do it all the time!! They also call out your license plate too when you get pulled over...not that I know that from first hand...

I listen to mine all the time...I had a BC350A in my 99 which I liked because it was preprogrammed...punch the button that was what you wanted to listen to...done!

I have a radio shack handheld now...200 channel. Use it with a magnetic antenna from radioshack too.

The reason I have one (really) is because they have the weather bands in them, and it gives me something else to listen to other than the CB and FM.

But do make sure it is legal...some places will allow scanners in VFD responder possesion...since I am usually out of state, and since I was one time a VF...that is what I claim!!
