Unless the muffler is totally clogged up that is not the problem.

Just put a 3 foot piece of tube and a muffler on it for temporary and it will tell you if its your problem or not.
mmmhhhhh hard to believe thats the problem......i mean he has headers and some pipe and a muffler on......might be shirt but all there..last time i checked few small blocks at the track running zoomies threw the hood with noooooooo back preasure and those fawks flew down the track so i doubt that..sounds like a spark problem.....bad plus.....is the back fire going down the road??? i had that problem on old motor....was builden up un used gas in mufflers and pop it would go off bad.....fixed that problem with a new motor and wow no problems yet the same exhaust set up
Sounds like the timing is off or the HEI is taking a dump. Check the vaccuum advance and make sure it works. Sounds like you are not getting any advance...or your timing is retarded.

:withstupid: Sounds like the problem to me I ran mine with headers and 1 foot of tube at the last mud run, ran like a champ
I have seen motors with wore out cams do the same thing. As far as the exhaust, Alot of your racecar people say that the proper way to allow for back pressure is to hook up some pipe to the headers, say 3 or 4 foot. Then run it, where ever the pipe stops turning blue, cut it. Thats all the exhaust you need for backpressure. If you want mufflers, then mount them farther back than where it stoped turning blue, that way you won't burn your mufflers out as quick.
