the problem that i'm having with the starter
it is engaging the flywheel hard at times. i have 76 chevy blazer with a manual transmission. i add, delete shims, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.. i've been through at least seven starters within a year of owning it. so any advice will help..

Just a thought, but is there a chance your flexplate/flywheel is bent? That might cause the stater gear to slam out further than it's supposed to?

You might also want to check that the bolts for the flywheel are torgued down properly, and that the flywheel itself is in good shape.
