I am wondering what kind of milage people are getting in their trucks. The first 6 months I had mine it was getting about 15 on the freeway sometimes better. I even got 14 while towing.

Now I am getting like 9 around town and maybe 11 or a little better on the freeway. I dont know if this had to do with my headers or my roller rockers. Could this be an issue of the rockers being out of adjustment? could it be caused by exhaust leaks? I dont think my headers are leaking but you never know.

thanks

With 100,000 miles on my truck I had been getting 13.5mpg regardless of where or how I drive.

Unfortunately I jsut started getting some slight pinging at 70+mph when cruising (not under laod like typical pinging) and have lost 2 mpg.

I have a 96 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. I recently put on a 5 in. suspension from Skyjacker, and a set of 35x14.5 Thornbirds. I started out with about 11 mpg, and after all this I am now getting 9 mpg. I am planning on dualling out the exhaust, and I want to get a K&N air filter too. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might do to improve this just a bit?? I am becoming a preferred customer at Shell, and would like to make my visits a little less frequent. Any help would be appreciated... <IMG SRC="/board/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif">

My biggest suggestion is to slow down. There can be a huge difference in mileage, up to 2-3 mpg if you slow from 75 to 60-65.

Other than that, aftermarket exhaust, good filter, even an aftermarket ignition system. I picked up a little mileage with my MSD 6A and Blaster coil

My truck is a 94' 360/auto, 3:55 ratio, 32" tires and 136,000 miles. I'm currently averaging about 14mpg on the hwy, 9-11 around town. I use my criuse cntrl at 68mph when going to work (compressed work week,4:30am no traffic)
I expect this to change when I install the lockers and 4:10's I've aquired.
How accurate is your speedo reading? Has it been calibrated to your current gears/tires?

I swapped out my speedo gear. I had a local speedometer shop (las tone in Northern CA apparently) do it for me. They ran the truck at speed on some rollers and calibrated that way.

'98 1500 Q-Cab 3" lift 35" tires...360 w/auto trans. I average about 12mpg in the city and 16mpg on the highway. There are about 110,000 miles on my truck. It's pretty much stock besides a K&N drop in filter, and Flowmaster dual exhaust.

canyonero02,

Thanks for the reply.

I only have 15k on my 01 and I am getting about 9.5 around town and a only about 11 on the freeway. I know that my driving habits arent the best but this is still killing me. My truck runs premium as well since I have a chip in it. The mileage did not change either way with the chip...
I am seriously thinking that I have an issue with my roller rockers since they arent in perfect adjustment. I guess its time to adjust or remove.

I'll echo Jason's comments on driving... In the flats, if I keep my truck at 70 or less, I can squeeze 14.5 out on the highway. all around town? 12 at best. It's the accelerations that kill you.

I experimented for a week and drove carefully on the highway, no quick accelerations, so that once on the HW, I never downshifted out of O/D. gained about 2mpg.

Now I live in the Santa Cruz mountains. I have to go up 1500' and back each drive to/from work, I average 9-10 now. 10 if I'm nice, 9 if I'm having fun. I have fun.

Truck has 40K on it.

Drove back from a little company party a few weeks ago...in Coloma, CA. on my way back home, my friends and I decided to take a different route than the way we took there. By the way, taking I-5 to I-80 and through Sacramento traffic (speeds averaging 75-80 on I-5) I got about 14mpg. On the back road through someplace i've never been before. Passed a town named "Rough and Ready" and averaging 55mph, I got about 16.5mpg. Mostly flat ground with no traffic. Even though I get pretty good on the freeway though, in town I get about 9mpg.

I have a 2001 Quad Cab 4x4 OffRoad truck, I average about 12 1/2 miles to a gallon in the city and 15 miles on the highway. I cannot use regular unleaded without the engine knocking on a uphill excelleration. I must use the more expensive super unleaded. I just think that all the gas stations are watering down their regular unleaded to etend their supplies.

This is really starting to bug me.. The last two trips I had down to Hollister I drove 65 the entire time both ways and got about 13.

Once I get my roller rockers removed from my truck I can going to reove my Jet Performanc chip and see where I am at. If I am still getting 10 everywhere I am going to the dealer cause there is something wrong.

I have a 96 Ram 1500 with 170,000 miles on it (highway miles) a 4 inch suspension lift, 36x12.5 swampers and factory 3.55 gears. I get 9.5 mpg on the higway and 7.5 to 8.5 in town. Mine seems to be much worse for the tire size and lift compared to others. Plus I'm not sure how fast I'm going because of the tiresize.

Man, all you guys seem to be doing pretty well, I have an 89 Bronco with a 351W, 4in. Pro Comp. lift, 33'2 and stock 3.55 gears. On the freeway i get about 11 MPG and around town I get 8 MPG or less, depending on how hard I drive. I use mid grade ARCO gas, or I get nasty pinging around 3000 RPM. Truck runs like trash on any other gas.

I have 01 dodge ram with just over 10,000 miles, its all stock, I've got some plans for some modifications, I've been getting around 15 mpg highway and 12 mph city, I was wondering if a throttle body spacer with Helix bore design made by poweraid would improve fuel milage, they say it spins the air going through the trottle body and then into the combustion chamber to give you better atomized fuel mixture for better efficency thus giving you better performance and improved gas milage, I've Also heard of a product called the tornado that does basically the same thing. does anybody know anything about this products, any suggestions would be helpful

I think this is the best friggen site online! YOU ALL ROCK! (or sling mud, depends on your preference!) Anyhow, my name is John and I am a newbie to y'all and am looking to begin my project in 2 weeks. I have a stock 1997 Ram 1500 CC SB 4x4 "Sport" and it's running the 360 with a 3.92 ratio. I get about 11 MPG city and MAYBE 13 MPG on highway (downhill with a tailwind!) I drove my '97 from Phoenix to Hampton Bays NY and the damn MPG didn't change much! I am 2 weeks from a Fabtech 5.5 Performance Lift (System) and hope to be running 35x12.50 15 Goodyear MT/R's on Eagle 15x10's. What is this going to do to the MPG without any engine upgrades? Will the change be that drastic? Secondly, I was going to put on a K&N Filter charger and a Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler to help? Y'all this it will level out the gas useage? Welp, off to other forums to post! I'd like to see if anyone is here local in AZ? Anyone?
Thanks!
John

I think that the best thing I ever did to improve MPG and horsepower was to have the exhaust done on my ride. Seriously, ove the stock stuff, I got about a 2 MPG increase and noticed loads more power. I have 3 in pipe from the cats back to a single dual chamber Flowmaster and two 2.5 in. pipes exiting both sides just behind the rear tires. Truck sounds meaner than heck too.

When the truck was stock, I was getting about 14.5mpg. After the lift I lost about 2 mpg. Adding a drop in K&N, I gained about .5mpg. Then adding the 3 chamber flowmasters, I gained about 2-3mpg. Depending on how I'm driving.
