explorer rear hatch

Just bought my wife a 98 explorer xlt and the rear hatch lock seems to work intermittently with the remote I can hear it unlock but when you go to pull the handle nothing happens then we drive somwhere and it works fine. then next time nothing again it seems to be normal when the weather is nice and doesn't work right when it is damp out.

Any help or tips greatly appreciated
