how much do you want to spend? How about clearing codes or reading live data? I have this one, and for a mid range scan tool I've been very pleased. http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/OTC-3409.html They also make a less expensive one which may fit your needs. http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/OTC-3408.htm

i wouldn't call it the 'best'. it doesnt have the nickname SLOWdis for nothing. that thing is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

i believe MAC tools sells a cartrige/cable that plugs into a palm pilot. tells you codes and live data. they are pretty quick to find codes, you dont have to put any vin info in, it auto detects manufacterur data. only problem is the live data is very limited and has a very low update rate, but id rather one of those than wasting money on a simple code reader. you can find older model palm pilots reeeeal cheap.
i hate modis, we got them here at school, the snapons are better though, i like the ones that advance auto parts has, they are easy and quick to use.
If you dont mind me asking, what classes are you taking in college that require the use of a modis?
