4 watts is the legal limit for AM mode. they can go up to 12 watts in SSB mode. <!-- BBCode u2 Start -->http://www.findarticles.com/cf_offrd/m1185/n1_v30/17813246/p1/article.jhtml?term=" TARGET="_blank<!-- BBCode u2 End -->

I have a Uniden(I don't know the exact model number). My brother-in-law was a truck driver who also had the same cb as i did but only needed the radio. So I took the supplied bracket, which I mounted under the dash by the 4 wheel drive shifter using the screws that hold up the dash. I then used the bracket my brother-in-law gave me and mounted a big mouth speaker to it then put it on upside down on the radio. I think it looks fine and is low and out of the way. Another tip, if you buy a lower end radio, you should get a better mike. I don't exactly know why, but they are supposed to help with better reception.

The best antenna for the money is a mag-mount Wilson 1000 or 5000. These are the tall ones that you are probably talking about. I have a mag-mount 1000 mounted in the center of my 98 club cab. I have the coax fed around the club cab window and entering the cab thru a break in the weather stripping at the bottom. The wip is 5 feet tall but is very flexable and seems very durable. If you break the wip they only cost like $8 or $10. All you do is loosen set screws to replace the wip. Get either a Uniden PC78LTW or Grant LT. The Grant is more expensive but has single sideband channels. I had a 1/4 aluminum bracket made that bolts to the seat frame using existing bolts combined with a marine VHF mount to mount the radio. These mounts are made by Ram-mount. For more power you could also get an "export" CB but they cost $300 for a really good one. It all depends how far you want to talk. On single sideband (channels 35-40) you can talk to people all over the country if the atmospheric conditions are right.

Personally mag mounts suck for 4x4s especially if you go under a low branch. I'd go with a Wilson 2000 (mirror mount)
Depending on CB you could boost your wattage by two different methods. First you can have a CB shop install a modulator. This will increase your CB's wattage. The other is to add a linear. Linears can boost wattage up over 500 watts, however you'll need a big antenna to transmit long distances.

I bought my cb back in 1990. I got it from radio shack for $99. Everyone told me in 3 weeks it will break. It has 40 channels, pa and weather. It finally broke in 1994. Well so I thought... Listening to this thread I went and got it. I forgot to mention I bought a power mic and looked at the battery. It was bad to which if you have a bad battery you need to take it out or your mic wont work at all.... :lol so now it works... thanks guys... but also..
when I bought the cb I bought a complete headliner from JC Whitney which has a center spot for a radio and a light. Well I cutout the spot for the radio and put my cb up there. Also screwed in the mic mount to the side and it is all there nice and handy... It is currently out of the truck but if I get a chance I will try and take a digital shot of it out of the truck to show you what I mean. also JC Whitney still sells the headliner.. I think for $199 .. I payed $129 back in the day before it was popular... I guess...
Peace
