What air filter to get? I used to have an Amsoil air filter in my 2000 Tacoma. Does Amsoil make one for a Dodge with a 5.2L? Or can someone lead me to the right one to get. I will be going 4wheelin and going into mudd, so I want one that isn't going to suck up water or mud and mess up my engine.

Thanks

Are you looking for a drop-in replacement or a new intake in general (K&N GenII FIPK for example)?

Sucking in water is a function of the air intake, not just the filter. Once in the intake, water will go through any filter. If you get a K&N GenII or even the GenI the re are pre-filters that block quick dunks of water and splashes and such, but if you drown the motor, you drown the motor, no pre-filter will stop that. You'll need a snorkle.

Let's see, the Gen II K&N is the one that puts my filter down next to my headlight right? I just put in a K&N drop in filter and I noticed that I had a bit of a power increase and I also gained about a mile per gallon in my fuel economy. It still takes air out of the inner fender, but I don't know where to put a snorkel on my Ram and I think the one that takes air through down by my headlight just doesn't sound that nice when driving through deep waters.

Jeez, are ya'll grown men or old women? Yes, you probably did get alittle power from the filter but yes, it probably wasn't enough to be very noticeable. Anyways its not worth arguein' about! These forums are for people to help each other, not for people to tell each other they're wrong!

Yeah, c'mon guys, we're all grown up here! Everyone has a right to voice their own opinions...but there's no need to argue! We all here have the same interests and are just trying to teach or learn new things about the sport of 4wheelin'! <IMG SRC="/board/images/smilies/nono.gif">

A good intake system doesnt make a huge difference. But it is a good first step in engine modification.

And a dirty airfilter can kill performance. That's the one thing I know about my K&N. When it's time to clean, I can't drive up this one hill in 3rd gear at just under 40mph, lugs the engine too hard, and it drops to second.

pull out the k&n, wash it, and then no problems in 3rd any more.

I only noticed gains at WOT above 3000 rpm, and a slight, but barely noticeable increase in mileage.

Also, a K&N may have noticeable results on one kind of truck, but not an another. Depends entirely on whether or not the airfilter is a big restriction compared to other parts of the system (intake manifold, intake housing, TB, exhaust system, etc.)

Let me have a little fun here, ok? You buy a K&N fliter to fit in your Dodge, ok? It costs about 49 bucks. And you figure you'l need a cleaning /re-oil kit (9.99) too.So you put in the filter and clean it say 3 times a year and buy a cleaning kit every other time. If you own the truck say 6 years (pay off) youll spend 120oo on cleaner and oil. So youve spent about 170oo total. Now, you could also buy about 14 paper filters at say 12oo a pop and change them almost as often, not figuring in your time for cleaning the K&N. This is still almost as economical, especially when you factor in your cleaning time. If your gonna swap filters. Id recomend moving up to a FIPK system or at least an airaid, any exhaust or other mods will reap higher benefits. Btw, the FIPK system has an isolator plate which should help keep water out.If water gets as high as the filter it would probably get in the electrical power box and cause other maladies

I just got my dodge ram and I have not done any performance mods to it yet. I used to have a Toyota with a V-6 and I had a K&N drop in filter. There was noticeable horsepower improvement. When I say noticeable I mean that about anyone who really KNOWS their truck they can notice, 2 or 3 horsepower, or anything small like that.

How would the breathability be affected if you were to move the intake towards the firewall? My F250 puts the intake just to the driver side, above the radiator housing. Anotherwords it's high, but I've gotten mud splashed into it. I would like to know if I'd have any problems if I were to move the location of the intake. As it is a 7.3L diesel, K&N, no charger, would I also loose power and responsivness? Any help would be appreciated in this matter. btw, I don't rember any HP gain when I put in my K&N, however it upped my diesel millage a mile. Which payed off big when I drove to Ohio last summer. Got Mud?
