89 sub egr

My buddy is having problems with his egr on his 89 suburban. He has tried replacing it with ones for checker and autozone but from what we have heard they are genrally crappy. Is there anyway to take it off without freaking computer out and throwing a code? Are they supposed to leak when vacum is applied? Oh yeah its a 1/2 ton with a 350.

Thanks

disconnect the battery if you dont want a trouble code.
I know how to get rid of the codes but that does not fix my problem. Anyone ever gotten rid of their egr?
if you wanna get rid of the egr, you might need new heads. unless you just take the pump off, i dunno if your burb is serpentine, if it is, just disconnct the hoses. and wiring.
what kind of problems is he having? i would not remove it.

egr has nothing to do with any type of pump, or the serpentine belt system.
Well the main problem is every egr he gets all suck. They keep throwing codes everytime one is intstalled. I dont know anything about the egr valve but isnt it supposed to hold vacuum and just actuate a diaphram? Everyone he has bought has had someone of a leak, you could apply vacuum and it would not hold.

Any suggestions?
sounds like theres something else wrong with the truck. i dont know what because the truck isnt in front of me.
It could be the silinoid that is connected to the egr that went bad. One way to check it is to detatch it and run the truck, if its better, then you know what needs to be replaced. And if that is not the case, he might have a vaccum leak, cause it happened to me. There is a couple of ways to check for a leak, if you need help with that just ask and I will explain how i did it.
