I'm back for my weekly problem w/ my Ram.

2 weeks ago, it developed a rough idle and horrible surging in overdrive. Had a burned plug wire, which I replaced along with the plug and all was well until yesterday. I also installed my freeze plug block heater at that time. Worked perfectly until this.

The wife went to leave work with it yesterday, and it started to idle very roughly and make a sucking noise through the intake, along with some sort of rattling noise (which MAY have been the muffler which needs replaced.) A friend towed it home since I was out of town and said the CEL was coming on while they were towing it.

I got home, charged that battery, and started it. It made the sucking noise through the intake while idling rough and died. Now it won't restart. No codes. I unhooked the battery to reset the comp and see if that helped, and it will crank but not fire. This is the first cold day we have had. It is pushing zero and I can't get it into the garage, so I am looking at having it towed and worked on, but I'm looking for a place to start.

I was unable to get the rear o2 sensor out and changed while I was working on it 2 weeks ago, and I suspect that is bad. It has also had an ongoing problem of developing a rough idle shortly after being started cold. The engine will start to lope and it will start to suck air through the IAC passage. i know this because I have pulled the air box and stuck my finger in front of the IAC and can feel the air rushing. Could either of these, combined with the cold contribute to this?

RE: Now what, rough idle...won't start

Update: Got it to turn over. It took about 10 seconds of cranking and it barely took off, but it ran. It was sucking very loudly through the air box (IAC area as described above). RPM's were normal, but it felt like it was missing on several cylinders. Did not thrown any codes and did not show any pending codes.

Would a cat suddenly plug like that, and would that cause my symptoms, particularly as I updated? And from what I understand, they don't just randomly plug up, there is some other cause. Everything but the sucking noise came on very quickly while my wife was driving.

You are correct about charging the battery. Fuel pump is only a month old as well.

That's what I was thinking. It got towed to the shop this morning and I told them to start with the cat. Hopefully I'll hear something soon and that's all it is.

FIXED!!! The guys of the converter had detached completely from the can and had turned partly sideways, almost completely blocking the flow of the exhaust.

$350 for a tow and a new converter, muffler (which was about rusted through...I was peeling off sheets when I was under there doing the shocks), o2 sensors, and some pipes/hangers. That could have been much worse!

I will update when I get to drive it some more and see if that fixed the strange idling after a cold start.

Where did you get the block heater? I have been thinking of getting one but not sure on what type to get.

I think I paid about $30 for it at Advance Auto, but any store should have them in stock. I think they are pretty universal based on the size of the freeze plug. Another $30 for a battery blanket is a very good investment as well.

The biggest headache is the I couldn't get the block drain plug out, so when I knocked out the freeze plug there was a ton of coolant that spilled out. Just be ready for it.
