1976 mud truck...$1000 dollars, what to do......

    Looking for Ideas, Im looking to add performance in one way or another with limited money. what do you suggest?

    this is what I have already. 76chevy stepside 454, edelbrock intake and carb, headers, 14 bolt, and dana 60 locked with 456 gears, 39.5 boggers. possibly a slightly larger cam than stock.

    I really dont want to cut truck up and lighten too much. looking to add performance, power something!Also I dont know how to do major engine work so some labor may be a factor. any Ideas? ignition? electric fan? better fuel pump? cam? stall converter? what would you do?

    Electric fan is a good inexpensive upgrade. I know you do mudruns, maybe mount radiator in bed with electric fan? If you need any help with what ever you pick, I'm not far away. :D:

    Gears. 4.56s and 39.5s isn't a great combo. You could be running someting like a 5.86.

    thats not even possible , he has a 14 bolt and the biggest gear he can get right now is 5:13

    and with a 454 4.56 gears is just fine for the mud, big blocks and high rpm dont mix well without putting big $ into them

    I didn't realize you couldn't get gears higher than 5.13s for the 14FF... my bad. I still stand by my statement that 39.5s and 4.56s aren't that great, even if you have a 454. I have a stock 454 in my boat that I regularly spin up to 5500rpm+. It is just a stock Mark IV motor too. My cousin Deric runs a stroked BBC (540cid IIRC) in his '80s Chevy 1-ton mud truck, and runs a 6,500rpm pill in it. He doesn't have that much money into his motor either pretty much just a roller valvetrain, stroker crank, big cam, and aftermarket intake. Deric has the highest numerical number gears in his truck (5.13s from what you've said) and 44" Boggers, and typically runs it in low range and lets it shift out from 1st to 3rd. Works just fine for him.



    His dad has a 1-ton Suburban on 40s with the highest numerical gears (5.13s from what you've said) that they run in the mud with a stock 454 and they run it the same way. Low range and let it shift out. Pull it down a gear if it starts lugging. Those trucks are rarely below 4,500rpm in the mud and have held up fine for the last few years. The statement that you can't make a BBC last at high RPMs without spending a ton of money, just isn't true.

    4500 isnt high , 6500 is starting to get there

    this is $$$ for high rpm ,it regularly hit 10,000 rpm plus and had 7 something gears(i think it was like 7:17) with a powerglide ,but thats apples to oranges



    4:56 is just fine with the torque a bbc makes for an all around truck with 39.5's, sure more gear is easier on parts and gives a nice launch



    hell i run 4:10 with 40s in the mud and do just fine with a sbc



    alot depends on the mud also, thick gooey stuff will dog my truck withought gears, but soup doesnt bog it down at all



    its all a matter of opinion and there really is no wrong answer when its not a competition rig and just your basic wheeler

    what edelbrock intake is it?



    what are the specs on your cam, whats the seperation?



    a stall converter need would be determined by your powerband

    Very true Ken. Most folks consider 4,500rpm+ pretty high for a BBC, so that's kinda what I thought you were talking about when you said high rpms.



    My cousin and his dad have a BBC powered '68 Camaro drag car that ran 8.60's like 7yrs ago (been sitting since then as it needs a new rollcage installed), and a similar BBC powered mud racing truck too (4wd, race fueled, tube chassis, with an EB fiberglass body on it). Those things run 7,500rpm+. That is a whole different thing like you said though. Apples to oranges.



    As for the type of mud, all the mud I've been in here in MI is wet, heavy mud. That stuff even bogs stuff with crazy amounts of power. May be a little different up north where he is though.
