NV4500 1 3/8ths input shaft swap
By superhawk2002
This article does not cover the R&R of the NV4500, only the input shaft swap.
Input shaft install start: PUT THE TRANS IN NEUTRAL BEFORE STARTING.
Tools you will need: 1/2 inch socket, driver, and extension. Paint scraper. RTV silicone. Brake cleaner with a rag. Flashlight to inspect available internals. Rubber gloves if you so choose. Make sure you have a clean work surface -- I used a piece of cardboard to set the new parts on.
Using 1/2" socket, take out 4 cover/housing bolts. Remove shaft housing -- it pulls straight off. Mine started coming off before the bolts were all the way out.
Remove shaft -- it pulls straight out with very little effort. Visually inspect gears you can see. Scrape old rtv away. Clean surface with rag and brake cleaner. I would not spray the brake cleaner onto the trans -- instead spray it on the rag and clean that way.
Slide new input shaft into place. It goes right in. I took it in and out a few times just triple checking to make sure there were no special ways it goes in.
I wirewheeled the bolts to clean everything up. Place a thin layer of silicone on the new housing. The new housing only goes in one way (bolt hole alignment). Put the 4 bolts back in. I torqued them to 32 lbs - I could not find a torque spec here, but I used a torque wrench to take them off. 32 pounds broke them loose, so 32 pounds went back in them.
I cleaned up the old shaft, placed back in the bag with oil, and threw it on the shelf as a spare.
Total time -- maybe 20 minutes. If I did it again, I could do it in ten. VERY EASY. Good luck. |
