dodge 3500 heavy duty?

was there ever something along the lines of a dodge ram 3500 heave duty. i ask because of a truck i have come across. its a 2000 dodge ram 3500 4x4 5 speed ctd but its rated at 3 ton not 1. and its the actual tag from the factory says this. i also say this before on one of my dads old company trucks which was a 99 gasser 3500 but was rated at 3 ton. is it a special order thing or was it an actual option.

The designations are strictly nominal now, they're used for familiarity purposes.

My '98 "half-ton" is rated for ~1400 lbs. payload; 400 lbs more than 1/2 of a ton, but people are used to the naming designations - even if they have no real relation to payload capacity anymore.
