custom lift kit for 01' dakota

Okay, I am new to this forum although i've been on others related to dodge trucks. But since this forum is all about WHEELIN Smile i'm happy to be on it! So I have a 2001 Dakota 4x4 v8 4.7 with 90k and I wanted to ask if anyone has had experience with building a custom lift for the front IFS?? its very hard to find a lift for my dakota besides a $1800 rancho 3" which in my eyes is a waste of money cuz your paying for the name. getting blocks for the rear end is no problem, but would it be do-able to make a custom front lift in my garage?? I'm not sure if anyone has done this before so if so, fill me in with the pros and cons! Thanks I appreciate any advice I can get.

I haven't seen much people with dakotas on here but hopefully there is and you will get help with it.

Not really sure why nobody has stepped up with a 6" kit for theses trucks yet, but Rough Country had the idea on the R&D board a couple years ago and killed the project. The problem with building a custom IFS lift is the complexity of the front suspension. It can be done, but it will be a long slow process trying to build a bracket type lift and get it right.

That being said, I have thought many times about building a custom set of long travel front control arms, about 4" more track width than stock and building a long travel desert toy type suspension for my Durango to accomadate about 4" of lift. But have come to the conclusion that a set of long radius arms and a high pinion Dana 44 front with a 9" ford rear will be the start for mine if it gets any bigger.

Your best option is to swap in a solid axle. The front end components are weak from the factory and adding heavy tires and changing the factory IFS geometry only compounds the problem. However, I would expect to pay pver 1800 for a SAS. I had a 2000 QC dakota with a 3 inch body lift and 33's. I researched putting in a solid axle, but gave up on the project because of school.

as far as doing a SA setup, do you think a old chevy or 2nd gen ram dana front axle will work fine in my dakota? Obviously I would have to convert to a steering box, but I could use the original ps pump. the only thing I can think of is that the new axle will be wider than the dakota rear axle but there are ways around it im sure (i.e. wheel spacers for the rear?) I want to try and find something used to put in it

Which side is the front pumpkin at. I now my 01 Ram is like a Ford on the right side looking at the front I now my old 83 Ram was on the left like an old chevy. Whick side is the pumpkin on yours Dakota.


If you use a full size truck rear the tires will be way past the truck. I would use a Toyota Straight axle if the pumpkin is on the same side.

If the toyota axles would work I would do both Front and back for you will have the same size rears and lug pattern. I did a Toyota swap in an 85 D-50 with a big block 440 and 727 Trany and 205 Transfercase.

a early bronco dana 44(little bronco not the bronco II or full size bronco) would work really nice and if you get all the brackets and spring it would make short work of a swap since they are all bolt on brakets on a ford
i would think it would be minimal work to adapt the e.b. suspension into that gen of dakota, i will be doing that setup in a 92 dakota soon

Even the axles out of a full size bronco or F150 would be about the ideal size. I wanted to use cage arms, and stock springs when I was researching it.

our trucks pretty much have no lift kits. We got a 3'body, 3"rancho, 5.5 tuff country..etc. I would recommend that you do an SAS. I just finished an SAS to my dodge. I went HP 60 front, 14 bolt ff rear. Our IFS is so weak, i broke 2 d35 differentals and bent my arms over and over, so i decided to SAS my truck. If you were to buy a lift kit, i would recommend you dont run a tire larger then a 35. but like everyone else says, sas is the way to go.

my pumpkin is on the right side of the truck if im looking at the front, so left side of the truck if im standing behind it. and as far as the width, I would want to do both ford full size axles (front and rear) so that the front does not end up wider than the rear, correct? This also makes sense to me because I wouldnt want to have a locker in just the front and not the rear. Will I need to do any welding for the front conversion? I will try and find articles on dakota sas conversions and read more. I have been looking on ebay for used ford axles, as they seem the most popular for what I'm trying to do
