Hi Ya'll Im new here and currently i dont have a vehicle. Ive been offered a 1989 F-150 4X4 5sp with 189xxx for $1500. I may be able to talk him down a lil but so far no luck because KBB says hes about right on the price. The only problems with the truck are that on start up at random times it will imediatly rev really high and not come down, so what po does is shut the truck down and just restart it and it works fine. The only other thing is that it has a really stiff clutch that has to be pushed all the way to the floor before it ingages. Are either of these major problems or are they easy quick fixes?? Sorry to ramble but if its a good deal i dont want to pass it up. TIA.-John

If I were looking, and those were the only problems (have you tried out the 4 wheel drive yet?) those issues don't seem like deal killers. The carb is probably a linkage adjustment involving a solenoid. When you start it and it takes off on you, I would turn it off without touching the accelerator and then look at the carb to see what the linkage is doing.

what the problem is is hard to say from here... but the price is reasonably close to right.

However, 189K w/o a rebuild is pushing it a bit, so I'd start saving for one as soon as I bought the truck.

Thanks, and yeah i have tried out the 4X4 it works fine. Ill look into the linkage and see if thats what it is. Saving for the rebuild is one thing that i will definately do. Also any idea what the average mileage before a rebuild is needed?? ive heard over 250xxx if well taken care of which is what this has been. Just a random Q.Thanks -John

Depends on which motor it has

What are your plans for the truck? Is it going to suit your needs? Is this a "want" instead of a "need"?

Plenty of trucks out there- no need to get in a rush for something that has 189K plus miles with some "minor" problems. Every used vehicle is somebodys headache. Why hasn't the current owner fixed the problems? Especially if they aren't that expensive to fix. Things that are "cheap" to fix get fixed- things that cost money are left alone and the new buyer "..can fix them with a little time and money..."

Well my plans for the truck as of now are just to run it as is for a while. Then after it does start to give me major problems i plan to make it into a pure trail truck. Right now i need it as a daily driver and weekend wheeler(mostly a tow truck for my buddys Jeep). The reasons that he hasnt fixed them yet is that its not his main truck and he doesnt see the probs as anything major.

Would love to drop in a 460 with a C6 and some 2 1/2 rockwells with 49" boggers and yada yada yada but funds wouldnt allow that...now but mb in the future Naughty ...

RE: Would you recommend it??
Mickey Thompson makes some 49/19.5/16.5 for like 1500 bucks each. And watch that clutch. I have a 88 f250 with 160k miles and my slave cylinder is toast, doesnt hold fluid for more than 4 hours. Could be a bad line tho. 460 with c6 tranny is an amazing drinker tho! Average about 8mpg. Haha
