First sign of a bad lift pump is if you have trouble getting fuel back to the engine after changing the fuel filter. The CTD will still run with a bad lift pump but will be very hard to restart if you ever loose prime. You can also check the fuel presure at the rear of the filter, it should be about 15 psi. If not then its time for a new lift pump. Also running the CTD for a prolonged period with a bad lift pump can cause the injection pump to fail pre maturely.

I just replaced them both on my 2000 a couple months ago.

Lift pump- $250 (cheap insurance)
Injection pump- $1800 (failed due to bad lift pump)

Hope this helps,

When my first one went bad it would miss (zz----zz--zzzzz---zzz------z-z--) when starting it...my second one failed and it never gave a indication it failed...just zero on the fuel pressure gauge.

I noticed by putting a new one on, performance comes up quickly!
