Really need some help.
I already made a thread and it was kinda vague, but here it goes. So I have a 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. 2.7l....5 speed. Every morning when I start it up it sounds like a diesel....ticks, rattles..whatever you want to call it but it's not nearly as bad when it warms up. Now at first I thought it was the lifters, but I had a guy at a shop check it out and he thinks it's piston slap? I've never heard of this on a Tacoma. Now if this IS piston slap, then what I don't understand is why didn't my last Tacoma that was the same model do it? Another thing I heard was that there is a tensioner for the timing chain and has a fiber paw(sp)? and that it will make noise if it wears out? Now can anyone give me any advice at all on this matter? I'm pretty stumped right now, so any advice would really be appreciated.

RE: Really need some help.
piston slap starts at the high end not it idle. is the 2.7 a 4 cyl? if so adjust the valves. that's what it sounds like to me. especially if it goes away once it gets hot.

lifters? did you tell the shop that is what you thought it was? if you said your 4 cyl has bad lifters they might have been trying to take you for a ride.

RE: Really need some help.
We had two Land Rovers. One 'ticked' the other was quiet. Point is that could be a quirk of that engine.
Also, every manufacturer, on rare occasion, has an engine come off the assembly line missing rings or even having a wrong size piston installed.

So, what we need to make better guesses is mileage and how it has been driven.
