Oil Consumption/Intake Gasket Question
12-28-2003, 05:35 PM
Post: #1

On my 1995 Ram 5.9l, every 2,000 to 2,500 miles I burn 1 qt of oil. Looking down the TB it doesnt seem to have a blown phelum(sp?) gasket. Do you think this is a concern for a motor with 96,000miles on it?

Also...I was going to do my Intake gasket a while back but I was told the EGR Tube was a mother ****** to do....which I tried before I did anything and I wasnt able to break the tube loose from the back of the intake...

What would you recommend trying to loosen that nut/tube up?

Would permentaly removing those EGR tubes from the Exhaust Manifold and the back of the intake hurt my Emissions? Maryland is a Emmisions State so I dont want to fail the test.

Thanks for the Input Guys/Gals!

Rick

Do a compression test to see if the rings are still good. If they are worn, you could be losing oil that way. Also, check for leaks around the oil pan and the front of the motor just to see if anything is getting by your eye.

As to removing the EGR, I seriously doubt it will affect anything. Afterall, they only ran it for a year or two on these models before ditching it. I doubt your emissions either will improve or get worse. The EGR doesn't do much anything anyway. Smash

I have Zero Oil Leaks...No dampness anywhere...The truck don't smoke on start up or running down the road so I would highly doubt its blowing past the rings. I'm kinda leaning towards the bad Intake Gasket like the normal on Magnum Motors.

If I can ditch the EGR Tubes on my Truck, There wont be any problems with removing the intake now cause I will cut Cut it Up it. and Find a Brass plug for it...As far as the exhaust manifold go, I had planned on ordering Header in a month or so...

well. my suggestion is to do what i did. get out the heating torch and heat up the bolts that hold the tube to the exhaust manifold, those came right out, and i lifted the intake out of the engine bay with the tube attached to it. i tried everything on that nut, and ended up melting my oil pressure sending unit trying to heat it up. i was using crowfoot wrenches as not to round it and get a good bite on it, no avail. honestly, 1 quart every 2500 miles isn't too bad at all, i wouldnt' worry. wpbmed (sp) said he deleted his egr setup and it works fine, so you could probably do it.

I have had my bolts to the EGR tube off several times over the last 5 years and never had any trouble getting them out. I would try and loosen them after the engine is good and warm. Watch so you do not burn yourself.

why would it? the gasket is between the intake manifold / head.. if its sucking oil from one of the runners, why would you see it on your plenum? It gets sucked in right where it leaks, so no, it wouldn't necessarily (if at all) cause an external leak.
