No reverse? 4L80E?

Ok, the Vehicle is a 1999 Chevy 3500 HD. I'm pretty sure it's the 4L80E but not positive. Anywho, lost reverse, all the forward gears are fine, fluid is normal, not foamed or burned. I know the shifter is going to the reverse position correctly as the reverse lights come on. I'm thinking a possible broken band in the tranny, but transmissions aren't really my thing. Any ideas?

If transmissions aren't really your thing then you're probably going to have to take it to a professional to look at. IMO transmission internals aren't something you want to {expletive} with unless you have a very detailed manual and some prior experience. You could always try the fluid and filter change.

Btw, thought you had an 00, not a 99?? In any case, it's not an HD unless it has a Solid front axle. 3500hd's where made up until 2001 in the OBS and have a SFA, even the 2wd's. If its IFS then its just a regular 3500.

This isn't my truck, it's a company truck. This one is big block and mine is diesel. and yes it is a 3500 hd, leaf sprung, solid front axle 2wd, frame brace, and higher cab.

What I should have asked was if it could be a solenoid or something electronic vs. a broken band. I have been into a few transmissions and they still work fine, but as far as diagnosing one, and knowing them off the top of my head, I do not. Like i said the fluid looks new, and forward gears are fine, so I can prob rule out TC or clutch problems.

I'm not 100% positive because i've never delt with this tranny, I have worked on its little cousin though, a 4t60-e. I think if it were a solenoid problem you would be missing some other forward gears as well. It could very easily be the reverse band, or it could be something wrong with the apply servo to that band. might not be anything too major requiring a complete rebuild, but it will probably take some disassembly to fix it. Like i said, i'm not too familiar with this tranny, but on some, you can pop the oil pan off of it and adjust the bands from there. Maybe try getting a service manual and find out, and if you can, try tightening it up some and see if there's an improvement.

more than likely its the 3-4 clutch pack (burned up clutches and or destroyed the one way reverse clutch) you're out of luck. Take it to AAMCO Not sure but It will prob run you a little over a grand, because its a Full rebuild with some Hard parts.
