NP 208 Strength?

How strong are NP 208's? I realize this is a broad question and I don't expect it to be as strong as a cast iron 'case, but how to they compare to say a NP231? I have both a Dodge and a GM 208 case and they seem to be beefy compared to the 231 that was in my ram, but how strong are they really?

they are pretty strong. thats what our plow truck has in it.

I would say substantially stronger than a NV231 and probably as strong as a 241.

A 231/241 has slightly better low-range gearing...or I should say have slightly more reduction, and SYEs are readily available for the 231s and 241s, whereas I'm not aware of any SYI for a 208. I think some Ford 208s had fixed yoke outputs, though. Not as though that's of pertinence to your equation.

ive only been able to break one... my ol man was pissed!!! i was plowin in four low and the rear end blew up and locked but the front was still pulling... leading to a twisted off output shaft and broken tail housing... but all of that is harsh conditions such as heavy snow piles, granny gear, and 4 wheel chains

In the last 2 years my truck has eaten 2 208's.I think there crap but I do like the lower 4 low compared to the 205.

I have had a 208 in my mud boggin truck for 4 years now with no issues on 38 boggers,

As for the sye kit, look up screen name on here is muddinmanny, he did something to his GM 208 to get a fixed yolk, and if I remember it right, it was cheap




78 chevy 38.5x15x16 boggers 12000lb milemarker winch front, 8K ramsey rear, 6in suspension, 2in body and rhinolined the whole truck, inside and out

Some Dodge 208s came with a fixed yoke. Manny combined a Chev and Dodge 208 to get rid of the Chev slip-yoke. His build video of this is on Youtube.

Yeah, I did the hybrid. Very easy to do and is a heck of a lot stronger than a slip yoke unit. That's for sure. Here are some pictures of the unit.

i have always liked the 208 and never broke one yet. ive broke that 203 piece of crap twice. great thing about 208s is they are in every junkyard, they are light. it hast that 2.61-1 gear ratio (or whatever it is) i have one in my k5, with a 400ci 1 tons and 38s. also have one in a sfa s10 with 33s that i beat the hell out of.
