Be safe brother, there are alota idiots out there.
Ohh...I know all about it...I was down there for Katrina and in the Houston area for Rita...
When we were first getting ready for Katrina, one of our Flight Engineers, who had done hurricane relief missions before, asked if we were taking weapons...The Battalion Commander laughed at him "We're going to New Orleans, not evacuating Saigon" were his exact words. Two days after we got there, they sent weapons to us from Ft. Hood.
I talked to a guy today from New Orleans who had to evacuate. He brought his family up here to Alabama. He said he had just finished remodeling his house from Katrina this past Friday. He said he turned on the weather channel Friday night and was like . He said he hadn't even gotten to move back in yet. I felt really bad for the guy but he seamed pretty upbeat.
We are in east texas and during katrina we went a week without power. IT SUCKED!! And of course everyone ran out of gas and no stores were open or anything. It was pretty bad. We have a lot of evacuees staying here. I think they said there are 20,000 people staying here or something like that. We could see up to 5"-12s" of rain and up to 55MPH gust of wind.

Things are still pretty messed up down here. The eye hit my town (Houma, Terrebonne Parish) and there are trees everywhere, lots of wind damage. No huge flooding issues though. Even though we're about the same elevation as New Orleans, we have much better drainage via the bayous and canals that are everywhere here. I stayed a little north of Jackson, MS and met some really awesome people and even had a chance to visit the local Hooters. I was just able to come home yesterday. Luckily, my house had pretty minimal damage. Just a little vinyl siding messed up. I was able to fix most of it today by myself.
P.S. Please, please, don't group the rest of Louisiana in with the idiots that did the looting, rioting, welfare recieving, etc in New Orleans. The rest of us aren't like that. I don't know what's on the news, but New Orleans had pretty minimal damage with this storm compared to here.
What are they saying about Ike? Last I heard, it wasn't supposed to make landfall until the end of the week, but there were no estimates as to where it would land. Hopefully it doesn't hit, as we're slated to help out if this one turns towards the gulf. Be safe and glad everyone down there is okay (for the most part).
I wuz watching the newz earlier and thay sed every model has Ike in the Gulf in a matter of few days and gaining strength after it crosses over the islands.
That is not good.
Unless DJFiji were to charter his white MACRO machine out into the Gulf and ram that sucker with one of his dangling headlights...
Basically, unless it were to peter out/lose strength, it sounds as though Ike is going to absolutely hammer the heck out of the area where it comes ashore. I certainly don't want to marginalize any area, but the last thing Louisiana and that general area needs is another big storm in the wake of GOOOOOOOOstav.
