Front drive shaft woes...
08-12-2003, 08:31 AM
Post: #1

A friend of mine just did a SOA on his 89 YJ, first time out he bent his front drive shaft, it wobbles real nice. Then we noticed that I bent mine as well.

Any suggestions? This must be common, so there must be something I can do instead of replaceing drive shafts all the time.

you might be able to fab some sort of gaurd or skid. Id check to see if anyone makes something to keep the fronts protected. other then that though i havnt heard of that happening too often. Ive got a tj and a buddy with a yj and never had that happen. Shooting

It was about a 100-yard mud hole, no rocks or stumps...just mud and dirt. The front d-shafts on Jeeps are so small in diameter and long, I just wondered if there is a quick fix or direct swap with something a bit stronger.

As for where it bent, it was right in the middle. Instead of being a straight line, it's an arc. The cross member has the appropriate notches, lots of clearance even under flex. Any help is appreciated.

well if thats the case it could happen even with a fullsize d-shaft..

Id take it down to a local D-shaft shop, and ask them about what they can go to make up one for you custom, or find one like out of a 78-87 type 1/2ton chevy and have them change the flanges or yoke to match your
t-case and differential.. that way if it happens again it would be easy to replace. the chevy fornt should be about the smae length as your jeep front i would think!!!

Good Luck BIGWILL

Did you test the driveshaft and see how much slip it had each way?

A friend in our club had a YJ and did the whole lift thing with SOA.....the one of the guys said the driveshaft would be fine, but it kept seperating and getting bent on the trail. He just needed a longer one.

Also, if it was in a mudhole....there could have been a hidden clod of dirt, rock or a stump that banged it. It doesn't take much to bend a driveshaft since it is just a hollow tube....like a tall coke can!

Thanks for all the advice guys, it turned out to be this exact problem. Just sitting the shaft only had about 1/4" slip left. Problem fixed...no bends yet.

Wow, this is an old one. Good to hear you got it figured out.
I just knew that was it cuz there were quite a few YJs in my club having the same problem at the time. They just needed new, longer shafts.
