Installing gears in dana 44 and 9.25
Ive been looking at changing the gears in my dana 44 and Chrysler 9.25 (current 3.55 gear) for about a year now. Being just out of high school I need to replace the trans, and re gear to save the new trans that will be going in. Getting the trans in is no problem, but I have never dealt with gears. After some searching it seems that re gearing is a tedious, and precise job that is best left to a 4x4 shop.

Well, that is the problem. I cant afford that since they qouted me at $1300 front and rear, so I'd rather take the time and re gear myself. Ideally I want to just go up to dana 60/70 with a locker and beef everything up but that is not an option until a few years from now.

Anyway, I wan't to do this myself to save about $600 and time is not an issue (until winter hits...but I have a while til then). The plan is to buy 4.88 gears from PORC and get the thick gear for the 44 and normal for the 9.25 and a master install kit.

says a "first timer can get decent results at home" and gives a TON of info so it gives me hope I guess. I want to learn, I need to learn, and I don't want to go back to 33's...

So basically, is it feasible with patience, proper tools, and step-by-step instructions for someone that has never dealt with differentials to do this properly?

Thanks for input, tips, advice, etc. I will need it.

By the time you get the tools needed to do it right, you will be close to your quote for the install. If you take your time, you can do it yourself. You will have to pull it apart a few times before you get it right.

If the tools are that expensive I may as well just take it to the shop and not deal with it. Too bad, I was looking forward to learning; one day I suppose. Thanks for the insight.
