I'm listening to the radio today at work, 103.5 Kiss FM in Chicago and they have the Drex morning show, its kinda a young/middle age more so liberal talk show that talks about everything goin on today.
So, they're talking about college grads graduating into a recession and how no one can find a job. So they have callers phone in saying how they are so pissed that they can't find a job, blah blah blah screw whoever made this recession. Then people say "well I majored in something I liked not something that made a lot of money".
Then they ask what their majors were, people call in saying, film management, anthropology, etc.
I'm sorry, but this is {expletive}en Chicago, not Hollywood or an archialogical dig in South America. Its not exactly like theres a large market for those jobs here regardless of how the economy is. On top of it all, if you wanted to do something you liked and didn't do it for the money, then wtf were you expecting? Its not exactly that peoples dream jobs are in mass abondance.
Not only that, but I run into the random person at school sometimes that is majoring in the most F'ed up thing... my roommates ex majored in Math... wow now you only have to go back and get yourself a teaching degree to do anything with your first one...
I appologize if anyone is majoring in these, I am not calling anyone out or dissing majors just these dumb people.
I dont think a degree means that much if there isnt hard work behind it.
Yes, doctors and lawyers make alot of money, but they also go to school for like 8yrs to do so..thats hard work.
But some nerd that does 2yrs of some bs degree...gimme a break. That doesnt mean anything.
Its funny cause my brother quit hs and now he works for my hubby and makes about 125gs a year. He works VERY hard and had to move his way up. ( I think his first year was about 65-70)
AT first my dad's family thought my brother was a lost cause because he quit hs. But now the golden child ( my cousin) who went to college and did all the things he was supposed to do...is always going from job to job..making like 12/hr 9-5. And in the last few years...my brother is the "smart" one that works hard and gets ahead. No paper is a substitute for drive, and willingness to work hard.

I'm not saying your brother doesn't work hard but it sounds like he knew somebody as well. $65k to start with no hs diploma..
Connections are VERY important. Even moreso nowadays.

When he first started he didnt work for my hubby( same industry but he is in management), so no, he didnt know anyone.
Minerall Exploration drilling...(not underground) You dont know anything about the field of work so dont doubt what you dont know. Truthfully, not alot of the employees are educated past hs. You just need to be able to work. There is training and you get certified.
You make a wage plus bonus. But the bonus is pretty much guarenteed. Its based on meters drilled.
I dont think any full time employee at the company makes under 65-70k.
I didnt want to say my business on here, but to prove my point...My hubby doesnt have a hs diploma either. He has gone through different training that pertain to his job. He didnt know anyone when he started...he just had a willingness to work hard. He is now a field supervisor and makes as more than the average DR in the US.
And thats with a full benefit package and pension.
SO it is more than possible with just plain old hardwork

jobs with a certain element of danger also pay high wages just like crab fishing so i could easily see where any sort of exploration could start at that kind of wage with no diploma
This is not underground mining here...this is surface drilling.
You cant even compare it to crab fishing or oil driling...completely different. The drill 3 inch core out of the ground so that the mine below knows where to expand. Its 12hrs 7 day a week for 4wks( with 2wks off) straight. Most times in dry camps sleeing in trailers with a cook that does all your meals. They pay for your lodging and set up your flights to and from.

Its tue its not easy especially when you have a family or a gf. But this is the job he has had since we met...so its fine for me.
This is the reason why alot of guys quit and its hard work as a helper....you get really dirty lol Some find it hard to be away from home. Especially when they go overseas. ( 3 month runs in Africa)
