Dana 44 front axle on a 98 dodge ram

Are the inboard axle shafts in these axles known for the splines wearing down? The splines on my inboard axle shaft where the four wheel drive actuator is located are worn down to a taper. I don't use four wheel drive much, but when i do, i noticed lately that it kicks out of four wheel drive when the truck is moving. Any help or suggestions...?

My guess would be that if the splines on the axle shaft at the diff end are worn down then that could be a good reason that it kicks you out of 4x4, if there too worn im guessing they won't be able to lock to the gear in the diff and move with it. That would be my assumption anyways, if not hopefully someone can correct or add to what i said.

As for it being common i can't say i've seen many trucks come into the dealer i work at with splines being worn down, i've seen them twisted but not tapered but again theres guys with ALOT more experience and knowledge then i've got that may well have experienced the issue before.
