Hi all, I am new to the diesel world. Just sold my gasser ('01 Ram 1500) and got a used '03 2500 auto with the Cummins (non-HO). It only has 29K on it.
When I was driving the other day, it felt like the engine was going to die on me. I pulled over to a parking lot and let it idle...as it was idling the rev's would go from 400-1000 ??? Then when I go to drive again, it is really sluggish when I hit the gas until I floor it...then its ok. It's happened a number of times already, but no engine codes yet. I've been reading on this site about injector pumps and lifter pumps going bad, does this sound like one of those? It sucks because happens pretty intermitently right now, so when I take it to the stealership, they tell me they cannot reproduce the problem? UGH!!

My buddy had the same problem with his 03 and turned out to be a bad #5 injector and as the stealership said this has happened alot but I cannot remember if they did a recall on this or not.
I drove it to the dealership today as the problem was happening. They hooked up the DBR II computer and watched the engine stats. As the problem happens, the fuel pressure drops and rises ALOT. The target for the fuel pressure was like 5700 psi or something like that at idle, it would drop to 3,000 and shoot up to 11,000 psi while sitting there idling. He wasn't sure what exactly is causing this, but he ordered a feul pressure sensor?? I guess he has to contact Chrysler to order this part under factory warranty.... maybe they'll have heard of this problem before. UGH!!! I have a feeling this is gonna take a while for them to find.
Hey, maybe someone can help me with my similar problem. When the weather is hot (110), my truck idles low and stalls when i let off the accel. I bumped up the idle for a temp fix, but i think something else is wrong. Sometimes I let off the throttle going into a turn and the engine almost stalls and I lose my steering midturn...scary!
