CRACK IN MY TRANNY, now I'm sad
I came home from Louisville one night and noticed some oil in my driveway in the morning. I took a look and thnoticed a small crack in the rear housing of my AX15 right next to the studs of e NP 231. I have had lower control arm problems in the past, so I'm replacing them right now. I'm assuming that was the cause. I could buy a rebuilt tranny locally for about $800, but that kind of sucks. A guy at a local tranny shop things that he might be able to weld it, but I assume that it will need to be dissabled and the cost wll quickly aproach $800. Anyone have any ideas or a third option?

Thanks in advance,
Larry

Look into swapping in an AW4 from a '96+ XJ. Had a buddy that did that in his '04 Rubi. Works great.

If the fluid was completely drained and the welder only did a small portion at a time to prevent heat buildup, it could be done. Kinda like welding a patch panel in a fender... How easy is the crack to access, and how long is it?

RE: CRACK IN MY TRANNY, now I'm sad
My transfer case has some hairline cracks in it, just big enough to very very slowly leak. I JBWelded the inside covers -- no more leaks. I realize getting to it is a pain, but it may be a cheap fix. We were going to weld mine at work, but the maintenance guys thought the cast aluminum would crack more. A shop wanted 200 bux to repair the 2 cracks (with no guarantee of course).

Also, just finding another case and swapping your internals shouldn't be that expensive if you pull the tranny on your own. If you need a tranny jack, let me know.
