95 Ram V10 and 3/4 ton axle swap

RE: 95 Ram V10 and 3/4 ton axle swap
Well it is a 95 with 200,000 on it. Fresh tranny rebuild with only 5000miles on it. Its rough, basically only good for a donor truck. But, it does do burnouts from a dead stop on dry roads just punching the gas with no brake lol...so it seems to still have plenty of power. Ext. cab long bed (same as my truck) so the exhaust and everything else should bolt right up. Im just hoping being a 95 everything will still swap over easy. I drove it home 2hrs down the highway at 70mph and everything was good.

Is your 98 Ram OBD2? A 95 is OBD1, but I don't know what year they made the change. If your truck is OBD2 the OBD1 stuff might not fit your truck!

RE: 95 Ram V10 and 3/4 ton axle swap
I just purchased my donor V10 swap stuff yesterday as well. Here's the info I found on my research. OBD II started in 1996, so the 1995 will have a OBD I setup. You can make it work, but it may require some extensive wiring modifications. They started installing RE transmissions in 97/98, so everything prior will have an RH transmission, you will need to wire up a lockup and overdrive circuit to run an RH in an RE truck. Otherwise not a lot of differences. If that 95 has 200K and no coolant in the oil, it probably doesn't have the bad heads.

Since I bought 2 V10s: 1995 & 1997, 97 for my 98 3/4 ton, I am going to use the 95 in my Jeep project, so I found out a few other things as well. They make adapters for the Cummins motors to mount up to a 4L80E, 700R4, TH400 transmission and since the V10 shares the same pattern it should work for them as well. Or you can source a used adapter from an old bread truck with the 4BT Cummins. Supposedly there was also a 3 speed 46RH from 83-93 behind the Cummins as well, but the gearing would be high. I was thinking of using a TH400 to eliminate the OD and use an easier to rebuilt/cheaper trans + be more open to transfer case choices. There's a ton of options.

Thanks to Jason for helping me research this stuff. Hope I didn't hijack. I'll start my own here in a few weeks.

Alright, thanks. Alittle wiring mods dont really bother me that much.

Ill have to do somemore reading about doing the a RE to RH swap, and a OBD2 to OBD1. But im sure ill get it to work fine, just alittle more time consuming lol. But after i drove it and felt the power and how good the tranny shifted...i couldnt pass up the price.

I myself wouldn't attempt to mix obd1 and obd2. I've heard it can be done.. My swap was all plug and play, I spliced nothing! Everything appears factory, and my gauges and controls, ac, it all works. Would it be easier to just take the good parts from your truck and put them on the v10 truck?

RE: 95 Ram V10 and 3/4 ton axle swap
Nope lol...the v-10 truck is rotted...bad.

Ive been doing some reading about it...and it sounds to be easy enough. Mostly plug a play, with a couple other things here and there i guess. The 94 12valves would have been OBD1 correct? If so, i saw a guy that swapped a 94 12 valve into a 97 v-8 truck...and he said that was easy...so i would have to assume a v-10 shouldnt be too bad.

RE: 95 Ram V10 and 3/4 ton axle swap
Diesels do not have anywhere near the same number of wires as a gasser, plus the older cummins were very simple in terms of wiring. You can actually run a 4BT with just your standard starter cables and a single key hot wire. I agree it is possible to swap, but just do your research before you yank the motor.

I would recommend starting another thread on the matter to get additional input and keep us from hijacking this one!

Swapping the dashboards may be your best option. Also, check your smog laws, in California when doing an engine swap the new engine must be of the same model year or newer to get a certified engine swap sticker from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR).

I started swapping my axles yesterday.. got the new front end under the truck, but I couldn't get the cammed bolts on the lower control arms out of my old axle.. looks like I need to buy new ones or get more sav with the sledgehammer... anyone have any tricks on extracting these things?
