I have owned three Chevys that have had 700R4s in them. Each one of them has had problems. My most recent truck i bought, a 1998 silverado, has performing great and then about 500 miles after i bought it the tranny started slipping. Of course it is a 700R4. I was just wondering what other ppl thought about these transmissions and what kinds they would prefer.

the 700r4 was discontinued in 92 it actually was renamed in 91 to the 4L60
93 and newer are the 4L60E and is a good trans , the earlier ones needed some small issues fixed but all in all they were pretty solid, 96 brought some upgrades and differences, 97 started a removable bell housing
mine went 193,000 miles in my 94 before i lost 2nd gear and i was not nice to it with the 40's on it
my guess is someone had been towing far more than they should have with too small a cooler and you were the unlucky one to have it break after you got it
It all depends on who you get to do your rebuild as to how it will hold up. When mine went, I looked up the forums for our local racing guys and asked who was building their trannies. I got hooked up with a guy who build 700R4s for his race cars. His shop knew what they were doing any I haven't had any problems with mine at all. For these trannies, keeping them cool is of utmost importance. I have like an 85,000 lb (or something) cooler on mine mounted in front of the radiator. More fluid, more fins and more cooling surface are all good things here.
