Hey all, my sister has a 99 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.2L and about 46k miles on it. Question is where is the oil going??? It consistantly looses oil, about a quart every 800 miles or so. No visible leaks, no blue smoke, great power, normal fuel milage! What gives? anyone had this similar problem?

Take off the intake, and open the tb blades. Shine a flashlight and see if there are any puddles of oil in the intake, the belly pan gasket likes to go on these intakes, and it will eat alot of oil if it is bad.

try doing a compression test.

just ignore the specs at the bottom cus its for a honda. the same procedure applies though.

OK, I went and looked into the TB, sure enough there was oil in there, not much, but a definate sheen on the inside of the intake manifold. So how much $$$ are we talking here? Anyone had theirs done? Thanks for the info!! Also is this covered under the 7/70 warranty? The booklet says intake manifold and doesn't elaborate.

It is a known problem and I would try to get it done under warranty (should be covered). If not, its about $350 for a non-dealer to do and only a few hours.

FOr yourself, its a day job, and about $100 in materials (cleaners, gasket set, etc)

it is certainly covered by your warranty. take it to your dealer and don't take any crap from them. it takes the dealer mechanics 3-4 hrs here to get that done, depending on vehicle. i'm guessing the dakota would be on the short side of that, since you don't have to go climbing bumpers to get to the bolts. . .

It's not that bad at all, just a little time consuming.
