46RE shift linkage problems
I started having troubles with the truck popping out of gear into neutral. Didn't matter if it was in "D", "2nd", or "1st". At first it was just in 4wd when I had some throttle on it. Now it started popping into neutral when in 2wd pulling out and turning. I looked at all the tranny mounts and all are secure. However I found that the rod that goes into the transmission from my linkage has alot of movement in it.

I have a spare tranny here so I checked to see how much play that one had and found that it is solid.

If I grab it and move it, the top of the rod is secure but it seems that the bottom of the rod is unattached somehow, is there a bearing on the lower end or is the end into the casting of the tranny? Can I get at this to fix it through the throttle body? If not, how do I fix this?

This is the rod I'm talking about. Any help would be appreciated...

RE: 46RE shift linkage problems
Thanks but I think that may be for the top shaft guide, it's the bottom of the shaft that is moving around, the top seems solid and doesn't leak...yet. I can't find any pic in the FSM of what holds the bottom of the shaft. By the look of that pic in the ad it looks like it may be in the throttle body...

Those hard flexes come with a price somewhere no matter how solid you make your truck...

RE: 46RE shift linkage problems
Archer -

Yes, the shift lever shaft goes down into the throttle body. Well technically it goes down into the detent assembly (often referred to as a "rooster comb" by guys in the trans business). I would guess the shaft is wore on the bottom or, more likely, that detent assembly is worn creating a loose tolerance. Those detent assemblies are somewhat prone to wear causing the problems you describe and/or poor shifting (from park to reverse to neutral to drive, etc.). You'll have to drop the valve body to inspect everything.

That detent assembly can be bought, new, for $30-50. There is also a brass bushing you can install in the case if your shaft or case is worn at that area creating too much tolerance there.

RE: 46RE shift linkage problems
Thanks Zack, I'll drop the valve body this week and hopefully find just the detent needing replacing. I priced a new valve body, wow $360 w/ $75 core...

Did you get the valve body dropped and shift linkage fixed or the problem figured out?

RE: 46RE shift linkage problems
I was searching on Sonnax's website for valve body diagrams and came across this in their tech section..

RE: 46RE shift linkage problems
Once I dropped the pan and checked closer I think my problem was actually in the linkage. The shaft doesn't have as much movement as I thought it did. I think I may have had the linkage slip a hair from flexin so hard. I realigned the linkage and haven't had it slip in 2 wheeling trips...

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely bookmark that for future reference.
