360 oil consumption?
02-01-2003, 09:52 PM
Post: #1

Bought the truck at 32,200 miles, changed the oil to Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic. Second oil change is coming up here tomorrow at 36,000 miles. Had to put another quart in at about 3,000 miles. I've heard that these Magnum V8's like to eat a little oil. Is this normal or should I be worried?

the most likely cause is a blown plenum gasket, look down the tb for alot of oil in the intake.

Im gonna have to 2nd that. remove the air box, expose the throttle body, open the tb up and shine a light in there and look for oil. it sucks if thats your prob. Do you notice a power loss or pinging?

I'll agree with Big' an' 'hd, just for the simple fact that my Ram has over 130,000 mile on it, I use Mobil 1 10-30W synthetic and it doesn't burn/use/lose oil. Just my opinion though.

If you own it and don\'t use it...why the hell do you have it?

http://members.cardomain.com/ian_wallace

Yeah, plenum gasket. I also had pinging, eratic idle, and some smoke at startup. Be careful though. Depending on the condition of the gasket, you could be dispersing the oil evenly among the cylinders which will make it harder to see that its leaking. The sure fire way to tell is by checking for vacume. I am at home and don't have the link to the service bulletin. Soeone here should have it though. Good luck. Oh yeah, about $350 if you have a garage do it. Confused

if I remember right, you start up the truck and disconnect the pcv and plug it with your finger, then you should feel a pressure on the hole where the pcv ws if the gasket is good. If it's bad you will feel a vacum, something similar to that.

Well, no pinging, erratic idle, or smoke. At least none that I have noticed. Confused I did change the oil today, it was rather dark, but this is the second oil change I've given it and I've discovered the 1st owner wasn't the most religious on maintenance. Blue Evil

I'll have to pull the air box at work sometime soon and look. Poke

Anyone remember for sure how to check the vacuum?

Oy, this is not stuff I want to be worrying about on a nearly new truck.

mine burns it at 116K, only when i put it to the floor, believe bad rings. i changed the plenum gasket which helped tremendously. i use about a half a quart every 3K. before the plenum gasket change, 2 quarts every 3K.
